This study aimed to identify the factors affecting smartphone overdependence among older adults.
Methods
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 179 older adults using smartphones in B metropolitan city. A multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the effect of physical activity, social support, and depression on smartphone overdependence.
Results
Factors that affect smartphone overdependence among the participants were as follows: (a) purpose of using smartphone (β=.23, p=.001), (b) age (β=.23, p=.002), (c) smartphone use time (β=.20, p=.004), (d) educational level (β=−.15, p=.027), and (e) social support (β=−.14, p=.048). The model explained for 19.0% (F=9.30, p<.001).
Conclusions

Background:

This study was purpose to identify predictors for incidence of delirium after musculoskeletal operation in elderly patients.

Methods:

A total of 104 elderly patients over 65 years with musculoskeletal operation was participated in this study. After IRB approval, the study period was between April and August, 2017, and the data were collected using by structured questionnaires (MMSE-K, GDSSF-K, Nu-DESC). Collected data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and logistic regression using SPSS 22.0 statistical program.

Results:

The average score of participant’s cognition and depression were 24.85±4.51, 5.27±1.80. 34 (32.7%) participants had cognitive impairment and 83 (79.5%) participant were ruled out depression. As cognitive function, there were significant differences in gender, age, marital status, education, job, house and caregiver. As depression, there were significant differences by aids, operation history and perceived health. There were significantly negative correlations cognitive impairment and depression. The incidence of delirium in participants was 21.2%. During post operation three day, the incident rate of delirium over 9%. The strong predictor was cognitive impairment for incidence of delirium after musculoskeletal operation in participants.

Conclusions:

Therefore, it is suggested that geriatric nursing intervention for strengthening cognition of musculoskeletal operation in elderly patients.

Background:

This study is a systematic review of literature to analyze the characteristics and effects of suicide prevention programs for the elderly.

Methods:

We systematically reviewed literature published from 2007 to 2018 in 8 domestic and foreign databases (KISS, NDSL, Koreamed, RISS, Pubmed, CINAHL, EMBASE, CENTRAL). The main search terms were ‘elderly’, ‘suicide’, ‘intervention program’, and included 8 articles matching the selection criteria in the final analysis. The program was divided into activities, counseling, and community support programs.

Results:

Most of the programs effectively reduced suicidal ideation and depression by reducing suicide risk factors and improving protective factors.

Conclusions:

As a result of the analysis, it was found that it is necessary to develop a specialized program for the prevention of suicide in the elderly considering social, environmental, personal and community characteristics.

Background:

The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors influencing cognitive function and life satisfaction in elderly living alone.

Methods:

It was cross-sectional descriptive study by using secondary data from the 2014 national survey of Korean elderly. The study sample consisted of 2,249 subjects who live alone, aged 65 years old and over. Data were analyzed frequency analysis, χ2-test, t-test, ANOVA and Logistic regression analysis.

Results:

The risk factors that significantly influenced cognitive function were old age, bereavement, lack of education, no regular exercise and low socio-cultural activity satisfaction. The risk factors that significantly influenced life satisfaction were no bereavement, lack of education, no work, negative evaluation of health status, diagnosis of depression and no regular exercise. Also experience of emotional and economical abuse, neglect of financial support and low cognitive function were identified risk factors of life satisfaction.

Conclusions:

The elderly living alone with risk factors of cognitive decline should be interested. To prevent or delay cognitive impairment, regular exercise and socio-cultural activities were recommended. It was suggested that the promotion of cognitive function, appropriate work and exercise, and social efforts to prevent abuse and neglect can contribute to improving life satisfaction of elderly living alone

Abstract PDF
Background:

The population of the aged has been rapidly increasing worldwide, and about 50% of them are under chronic pain by irreversible degenerative diseases. This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) on pain, pain interference, and life satisfaction in people with chronic pain. In addition, this study proposed that anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, psychological inflexibility in pain, pain catastrophizing and kinesiophobia are mediating the effectiveness of ACT.

Methods:

Participants of ACT program for this study comprised the elderly aged 65 and over who had been suffering from chronic pain for at least 6 months and reported their pain intensity of at least five on the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale, 0-10). During the sessions, experimental group participated in the ACT program designed by Stoddard and Wetherell(2011) and the control group received health education. After finishing eight sessions of each program, data from 25 participants in the experimental group and 27 in the control group were used for the final analysis.

Results:

The results showed that the ACT program is significantly more effective on relieving pain, pain interference, anxiety, and psychological inflexibility in pain than health education program. However, anxiety and psychological inflexibility did not have significant mediating effects on pain and pain interference.

Conclusions:

Finally, this study has verified the curative effect of ACT for elderly people suffering from chronic pain. Therefore, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy can be used for supplementary treatment for patients with degenerative disease.
