The Relationship between Maladaptive Self-Focused Attention and Disordered Eating: The Mediating Effect of Body Dissatisfaction and the Moderating Effect of Mindfulness

Background
Maladaptive self-focused attention is a known psychological risk factor for disordered eating. However, the mechanisms underlying this association, including the mediating role of body dissatisfaction and the moderating role of mindfulness, remain unclear.
Methods
A total of 528 Korean adults aged 19∼39 completed self-report questionnaires assessing maladaptive self-focused attention, body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and mindfulness. Mediation and moderated mediation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS macro (Models 4 and 14), controlling for gender, age, BMI, marital status, and dieting status.
Results
Maladaptive self-focused attention indirectly influenced disordered eating through body dissatisfaction, whereas its direct effect was not statistically significant. Mindfulness moderated the association between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, such that the relationship was weaker among individuals with higher mindfulness. Subscale analyses indicated that the “nonjudging” and “acting with awareness” facets attenuated this pathway, whereas the “observing” facet counterintuitively strengthened it.
Conclusions
Body dissatisfaction appears to be a central mechanism linking maladaptive self-focused attention to disordered eating. Mindfulness—particularly the facets of nonjudging and acting with awareness—may buffer this risk. These findings highlight the potential of mindfulness-based interventions to mitigate cognitive–affective pathways underlying disordered eating.
Efficacy of Ecological Momentary Intervention Tailored to Drinking Motives for Reducing Problematic Drinking in Young Adults

Background
Brief interventions can inform young problematic drinkers about the risks associated with alcohol use. Ecological Momentary Interventions (EMIs), which provide feedback closer to the point of drinking, may help to translate the internal changes made from these brief interventions into actual behavior.
Methods
Thirty-six problematic drinkers aged 19∼34 years were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), Standard EMI, or Tailored EMI. Participants in all groups completed two daily EMAs for four weeks following a single-session intervention. They reported their drinking intentions and motives for the current day, and their alcohol consumption and drinking motives from the previous day. The Standard EMI group received feedback on the general negative consequences of drinking, while the Tailored EMI group received feedback specifically tailored to their drinking motives based on their EMA responses.
Results
Problematic drinking, along with related variables (e.g., drinking behavior, alcohol consumption, negative consequences, alcohol expectancies, and drinking motives) was reduced across all groups.
Conclusions
Further research is needed on the potential of monitoring drinking behavior to reduce problematic drinking and how to improve tailored EMI.

An Integrative Review of Psychosocial Intervention Programs for Children and Adolescents who Experienced Traumatic Events

Background
This integrative review study aims to analyze the core components, intervention strategies, and effects of psychosocial intervention programs conducted for children and adolescents in Korea who have experienced traumatic events.
Methods
The integrative review involved a search of major domestic databases using key terms such as 'children’, 'adolescents’, 'trauma’, 'post-traumatic stress’, 'intervention’, and 'education’. A total of 10 studies were selected for analysis based on predefined criteria.
Results
The 10 selected studies were categorized into three types of interventions based on the environment and structure of the intervention delivery: individual-based interventions targeting only children and adolescents, family-based interventions involving family members, and school-based interventions conducted within schools. These interventions were found to be effective in addressing mental health issues caused by trauma in children and adolescents.
Conclusions
Despite the serious nature of traumatic experiences among children and adolescents, this integrative review found that domestic research on psychosocial interventions for this population lacks rigorous study design and is limited in the selection of participants and trauma events. Therefore, the study suggests the need for the development and dissemination of more proactive psychosocial interventions for children and adolescents. The findings of this study are expected to serve as foundational data for the development of trauma managing programs for this population.

The Relationship between Level of Therapist Support and Efficacy and Adherence in Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Disordered Eating Behaviors

Background
Therapist support is an important intervention design factor in internet-delivered psychotherapy. However, the relationship between therapist support and intervention outcomes is not well established. This study examined the relationship between therapist support, efficacy, and adherence to Internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) for disordered eating behaviors.
Methods
Thirty-six women with disordered eating behaviors were recruited and randomly assigned to three groups: low, medium, and high levels of therapist support. The participants received eight sessions of I-CBT, twice a week, with varying levels of therapist support.
Results
While all three groups showed a reduction in eating disorder risk factors (i.e., body image disturbance, disordered eating behaviors, depression, and anxiety), there were no significant differences in these improvements by therapist support level. However, there were significant differences in intervention completion rates by therapist support level, with higher levels of support associated with increased intervention completion rates.
Conclusions
Therapist support can potentially improve adherence to internet-based interventions.
An Integrative Review of Psychosocial Intervention Programs for Infertile Females

Background
This study aims to analyze intervention studies conducted on infertile females in South Korea and research and research the core elements comprising these studies.
Methods
The integrative review was conducted based on the guidelines of Whittmore and Knafl, and included the following steps: problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis, and presentation. Next, six domestic databases were searched using keywords such as ‘infertility’, ‘intervention’, and ‘education’ in Korean and English, and published studies were reviewed according to specific criteria and quality assessment.
Results
Among 4,109 searched papers, 6 were selected for the final data analysis. A total of six interventions were conducted in the selected articles, and each strategy was variously categorized into cognitive, emotional, behavioral, relational, and physical aspects. All interventions were found to be effective in promoting psychosocial health in infertile females.
Conclusions
Despite the fact that female infertility is a major public health problem in Korea, the low number of articles reveals a relative lack of psychosocial intervention studies. Therefore, it is suggested that future studies incorporate physiological endpoints into psychosocial studies, and we hope that this study will serve as a basis for developing programs for infertile females in the future.
A Systematic Review of Communication Programs for Nurses Working in Hospitals

Background

Despite the implementation of several communication programs for nurses working in hospitals, no evidence-based systematic review has yet been conducted on their efficacy.

Methods

In this systematic review of communication programs for nurses, we searched for literature published between 2011 and 2020 in four foreign databases and one domestic database (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and RISS). The papers identified were evaluated on their quality using Version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2). The main search terms included “nurse”, “communication”, “program”, and “intervention.” Thirteen articles were included in the final analysis.

Results

The communication programs utilized various teaching methods – such as simulation, reflection, and debriefing – with a majority of these programs significantly improving participants’ communication skills and performance. However, the overall quality of the studies was low concerning the randomization process and measurement; relatively few studies made use of online education methods. All variables assessed using self-reported measures were significant, but not all showed significant results when using objective measures as assessed by the evaluators.

Conclusions

The study’s findings suggest a need for programs dealing with nurses’ communication with health care providers in diverse clinical settings and online-based simulation programs. Moreover, high-quality literature applying the randomization process and measurement is required. Additionally, it is necessary to use both subjective and objective measures to evaluate the overall communication capacities of nurses and reflect the contextual characteristics of various clinical settings.

본 연구에서는 노인 당뇨 환자를 대상으로 한 지역사회 기반 심리 중재가 환자들의 우울 증상과 혈당조절에 미치는 효과를 체계적으로 고찰하였다. 국내외 7개의 데이터베이스를 사용하여, 2008년 1월 1일부터 2018년 7월 31일까지 발표된 문헌들을 확인하였다. 선정기준에 따라 다섯 편의 연구가 최종 선정되었으며, 총 대상자는 제2형 당뇨 진단을 받은 지역사회 거주 노인 596명이었다. 메타분석에 선정된 네 편의 연구 모두 행동 교육을 목적으로 프로그램을 구성하였다. 추후에는 표본 크기를 늘려 심리적 중재 프로그램을 시행하는 것이 바람직하며 더욱 다양한 지역에서 수행하는 것이 필요함을 확인할 수 있었다.

The Effects of a Cognitive Behavioral Intervention on Perceived Stress and Somatic Symptoms in College Students

Background:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects a cognitive behavioral intervention on perceived stress, somatic symptoms, automatic negative thoughts and dysfunctional attitudes in college students.

Methods:

This was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group design. Students who agreed to participate in the study and had a total score of 7 or greater on the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 were asked to choose one of the two groups to attend: Experimental and control groups. Students in the experimental group (N=17) received 5-weekly group sessions of the intervention, each of which lasted 60 minutes. The interventions were not provided to the control group (N=15). Students in both groups were asked to complete a set of questionnaires at baseline and five weeks. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and repeated measures ANOVA were performed.

Results:

There was a significant interaction between time and group for perceived stress, somatic symptoms and automatic negative thoughts. Dysfunctional attitudes, on the other hand, were not significantly different by group.

Conclusions:

The findings showed that the intervention was effective for college students suffering from perceived stress and somatic symptoms. In particular, the significant decrease in automatic negative thoughts among students in the intervention group suggests that the effect of the cognitive-behavioral intervention was mediated by the cognitive factors of somatic symptoms.
