This article discusses the questions about meditation. Meditation is generally regarded as the heritage of religious practice in India, but most religions in the world have meditative practices. In the past meditation was handed down over to monks and nuns, but recently meditation became widely open to the public. Meditation gives a lot of benefits, and the first is "the relaxation response", the second is to enhance the power of concentration, and the third is the enhancement of awareness. Because of these benefits a lot of psychologists and physicians show their interest in meditation. Also Ecologists regard meditative life style as a good alternative for modern civilization. Meditation also can play a role to soothe the confliction between religions, for meditation does not put stress on dogmas. But meditation also has several side effects. Occasionally improper practices of meditation without right guidance may cause physical and mental side effect. Since meditation is basically designed to cultivate the inner mental world, those who deeply interested in meditation have the possibility to lose the sense of real life and escape from daily life. Since meditation puts much emphasis on subjectivity, meditation has the inclination to mislead the practitioner obsessed with the wrong subjectivity. Sometimes collective meditation leads to collective hypnosis. To avoid these kinds of side effects, we must have the rational and scientific attitude and should not forget the importance of daily life. (Korean J Str Res 2006;14:247∼257)
