Comparison of Stroke Knowledge, Health Beliefs, and Stroke Prevention Behavior between Early and Middle-Aged Adults

Background
The onset age of stroke is decreasing, leading to social loss. As such, primary stroke prevention is important. This study aimed to compare the stroke knowledge, health beliefs, and stroke prevention behavior between early and middle-aged adults.
Methods
In this cross-sectional descriptive study, a survey was conducted in three small cities in Korea from June to October 2020. The study used a structured self-report questionnaire that included items on stroke knowledge, including risk factors, warning signs, and urgent action, health beliefs, and stroke prevention behavior, as well as collected data on respondents’ demographic characteristics. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, 2 test, and Pearson’s correlation coefficients using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0.
Results
The participants included 104 early adults (aged below 40 years) and 143 middle-aged adults (aged 40∼64 years). The two groups showed a significant difference in their health beliefs scores. By contrast, they did not show a significant difference in their scores for stroke prevention behavior. However, their scores for health responsibility (t=−2.00, p=.047), nutrition (t=4.24, p<.001), and interpersonal relationships (t=2.04, p=.042) were significantly different.
Conclusions
Early and middle-aged adults showed differences in health beliefs and the stroke prevention behavior subfactors of health responsibility, nutrition, and interpersonal relationships. The present findings may be used when planning interventions or education programs for primary stroke prevention.

대학생은 성에 대한 올바른 의식과 가치관을 가져야 하며, 성적자기주장은 여대생에게 필수적인 의사소통전략이다. 이에 본 연구는 여대생의 외모만족도, 자아존중감 및 성적자기주장 간의 관련성을 파악하고, 성적자기주장에 영향을 미치는 요인을 확인하기 위해 시도되었다. 연구대상자는 일대학교에 재학중인 여대생 166명으로, 구조화된 설문지를 이용하여 자료수집하였다. 연구결과 여대생의 성적자기주장은 외모만족도와 자아존중감과 정적 상관관계가 있었으며, 전공에 대한 만족도와 자아존중감이 성적자기주장을 48.3% 설명하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서, 여대생의 성적자기주장 증진을 위한 상담이나 중재를 계획할 때, 여대생 스스로가 자신의 외모를 긍정적으로 수용하고, 자아존중감을 높이는 것이 중요한 부분이 되어야 할 것이다.

A Comparative Study on the Job Stress, Burnout and Nursing Performance of Nurses in Comprehensive Nursing Care Service Wards and Nurses in General Wards

Background:

The purpose of this study was to compare job stress, burnout and nursing performance between nurses who work in comprehensive nursing care service wards and general wards. In addition we identified a correlation among job stress, burnout and nursing performance.

Methods:

The participants were 80 nurses (comprehensive nursing care service ward: 40, general wards: 40) and the data were collected using structured questionnaires to assess job stress, burnout and nursing performance.

Results:

There was no significant difference in general characteristics between comprehensive nursing care service wards nurses and general ward nurses. Comprehensive nursing care service wards nurses were statistically significantly higher in job stress and burnout than general ward nurses. While there was no difference in nursing performance. There was a positive correlation between job stress and burnout in comprehensive nursing care service wards.

Conclusions:

In order to establish a comprehensive nursing care service system with high patient satisfaction, it is necessary to study strategies to solve job stress and burnout of nurses and to improve job satisfaction and nursing performance.
